Adele won the award for best pop solo performance for “Easy on Me” at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
Sunday night, Dwayne Johnson took the stage to give the award, which was for “excellence in a single performance.” Along with Adele, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, and Harry Styles were also up for the award.
When Johnson told Adele she had won, he said, “Get up here, new best friend.” This was a reference to how the host of the show, Trevor Noah, had started the show by saying Adele was dying to meet the former wrestler.
Adele stood up with a wide mouth to accept her award. She hugged her boyfriend Rich Paul and fellow musician Lizzo, while Styles and other guests stood up to applaud the British singer.
Adele started her acceptance speech by giving “The Rock” a big hug and kiss on the cheek. She then went on to talk about her fans and family.
“I was really looking forward to coming tonight,” she said with tears in her eyes and some stuttering. “I just want to give this to Angelo, my son.”
“Don’t cry if you win anything,” her boyfriend had told her.
Adele said, “And here I am crying,” and then went back to talking to her 10-year-old son.
She said, “I wrote this first verse in the shower when I decided I wanted to change my son’s life.” “He has always been nothing but humble, kind, and loving to me.”
At the beginning of the show on Sunday night, host Noah walked up to Adele’s table and said that he didn’t have “Dwayne Johnson,” but he did have “The Rock.”
Adele was surprised and happy when Johnson walked up behind her and hugged and smiled at her.
“The Rock, meet Adele, Adele, meet The Rock!” Noah said. “Okay, you two meet each other, we have to keep the show going!”
As the camera moved away, Johnson, 50, was seen taking a seat next to the now 16-time Grammy winner, who was up for seven awards at the 65th annual ceremony.
