Cyntoia Denise Brown was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2004 as a 16-year-old. She stated that she was at Johnny Allen’s residence after he picked her up from a well-known alley where women seek money.
Brown sensed that there was something strange about Allen’s behavior. Fearing he would assault her, she fatally shot him.
Thus started the case’s lengthy succession of court proceedings and public hearings. While the prosecutor alleged that she shot him in an attempt to steal money from him, her defense attorney had limited recourse. Therefore, her case was referred to the court of criminal justice.
She was subsequently found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to up to 51 years in jail.
All of this changed in 2017 when the documentary ‘Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Narrative’ and her biography ‘Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System’ told her story. Thus, Brown’s case made national news, and celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Lana Del Rey tweeted about it.
Where Is She Now?
In January 2019, Haslam freed 31-year-old Brown. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a heinous crime at 16,” Haslam said, according to The Tennessean.
“Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially given the incredible steps Ms. Brown has taken to restore her life.” Brown married Christian rapper J. Long following her release.

Brown, who now goes by Cyntoia Brown-Long, didn’t authorize the documentary, but she believes it will emphasize the need for criminal justice reform.
“While I was still incarcerated, a producer who has an old video of me arranged a deal with Netflix for an UNAUTHORIZED documentary, slated to be broadcast soon,” she claimed. “My husband and I were as astonished as everyone else when we received the news because we did not participate.”
“However, I am currently telling my story, in the appropriate way, in full detail, and in a way that represents and respects the woman I am today,” Brown said.
Brown later deleted the Netflix documentary-critical posts. Netflix tells The Daily Beast that Brown will promote the film and her book.
Oxygen.com has not heard from Brown again NBC Nightly News was her first post-release broadcast interview.
I’m ordinary. “I don’t know how many Cyntoia Browns are in prison,” she remarked. “The women who helped me get here are in prison for 51 years and up with absurd sentences. They’re hopeless.”
In the interview, she admitted to Allen’s death, saying she expected him to be violent toward her without proof.
“I recall the prior weeks. Always expecting violence. “Always having to justify me,” Brown added. Expecting men to assault me. I sometimes wonder, was I really in danger? Was that my imagination?

Tennessee-based Ambassador Speakers Bureau, a Christian public speaking group, employs her. According to Religion News Service, she spoke at an anti-abortion demonstration earlier this year for several religious causes.
Brown supported Chrystul Kizer earlier this year, according to BuzzFeed News. In 2018, 16-year-old Kizer admitted to shooting Randy Volar, claiming he was sexually abusing and trafficking her.
