The Biggest Sports Events in 2022
The Winter Olympics in China and the LA Rams winning the Super Bowl both seem a long time ago now – and there have been some other excellent top-class sporting events already this year. But, after a few years of delays and postponements, 2022 still has some exciting sports occasions still to come.
The big events always produce the best betting opportunities, as they seem to transcend sport and capture the imagination of the wider public. That is definitely the case this year – and we have put together our guide to some of the biggest sports events coming up later this year. It’s time to start organizing your watch parties with these five of the best.
French Open Tennis
We could have chosen any of the big Grand Slam tennis events this year – the US Open and Wimbledon are both also taking place later in the year. But after the controversy and drama of the Australian Open in January, the French Open is the next big one on the calendar.
The event takes place in the last week of May and the first week of June in Paris, France and is set to be an enthralling tournament. Novak Djokovic and Barbora Krejcikova are the current singles champions. But neither are favorites to win this year, with Rafa Nadal and Iga Swiatek attracting the best odds at the moment.
NBA Finals
We have already enjoyed the regular season, the play-in games and most of the first round of the NBA 2022 playoffs. But after all the drama of the coming weeks is over, we will be left with two teams – one from the East and one from the West – who will battle it out for the championship.
There have already been some surprises, with both the Lakers and the Nets eliminated. But there are still some very good players left fighting and we have probably not seen the end of the shocks quite yet either. But will it be Steph Curry, Chris Paul or James Harden celebrating in June?
Tour de France Cycling
It is one of the most grueling sports events in the world – but also one of the most picturesque. Cycling fans can enjoy the physical strength and talent shown by the very best riders as they do battle with each other and the course, as the Tour de France runs through its 21 stages in July.
The Grand Départ is actually in Copenhagen, Denmark this year – and the Tour De France stays in that country for a further two stages before arriving on French shores. The final stage will finish at the Champs-Élysées in Paris at the end of July. Slovenian Tadej Pogacar is the favorite.
World Series Baseball
At one point it looked as if we might not have any baseball at all this year, as players and the league failed to come to an agreement over contracts. But everything was (just about) sorted out in time for the start of the season in April and now America’s game will be played through to the World Series, scheduled for October.
There is a long way to go until that Fall Classic – with each team playing a 162-game season – so it is difficult to predict who will be this year’s world champion. The Atlanta Braves are the current holders of that title, but the LA Dodgers, New York Yankees and a whole host of others will be battling for the honors.
FIFA World Cup
FIFA’s soccer World Cup usually takes place in the summer months. But, as the tournament is to be held in Qatar this year, the organizers were forced to move the competition to the end of the year when the heat will not be quite so demanding.
Holders France – and the likes of Belgium and England – will be the favorites to lift the famous trophy in December. But, whoever ends up winning, the World Cup will be the perfect way to finish off a year of top-class sport.
