Where is Steven Avery at This Moment? Is Steven Avery Still in Jail?

Steven Allan Avery, a convicted American killer, is a native of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He was incorrectly convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder in 1985.

DNA evidence exonerated Avery of the crime in 2003 after he had served eighteen years of a thirty-two-year sentence (six of which were concurrent with a kidnapping sentence). In 2005, he was quickly arrested for murder again.

Avery’s release from jail in 2003 generated widespread criticism of Wisconsin’s criminal justice system, which ultimately led to the passing of the Criminal Justice Reform Bill in 2005.

This bill contains provisions intended to prevent future occurrences of similar injustices. Avery filed a lawsuit against Manitowoc County, the former sheriff, and the former district attorney for wrongful conviction and imprisonment, demanding $36 million.

In November 2005, while his civil case was still underway, he was arrested for the murder of Wisconsin photojournalist Teresa Halbach in 2007. 2007 marked his trial, conviction, and a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The appellate courts upheld the conviction.
