After a huge opening weekend in the US, Fast and the Furious 9 is on track to break the pandemic-era box office record.
This week, the ninth movie in the record-breaking franchise came out in theatres around the world. It opened in the UK on Thursday, June 24, and in the US the next day.
Variety says that the action movie with Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez made $30 million from more than 4,000 theatres on Friday alone.
If sales keep going at the same rate over the weekend, it’s likely to beat the box office record set by A Quiet Place Part II during the pandemic.
The movie didn’t move to stream services, in part so that fans could see the amazing action scenes as they were meant to be seen on the big screen.
Tyrese Gibson, who is back in the series, told the BBC, “We’re heavily relying on the fans and supporters to help us make the statement we all want to make, which is, yes, it’s easy to go straight to streaming, but there are some movies that really belong in theatres, and this is one of them.”
Diesel recently said that he would love to make a musical out of the series. Kelly Clarkson asked him on her show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, “What about a full-on Fast & Furious musical?”
The actor said, “I’ve been dying to do a musical my whole life!” We were almost going to do Guys & Dolls together, but we didn’t end up doing that. But I want to do a musical so badly.”
When Hobbs & Shaw came out in 2019, it was a turning point for the Fast & Furious franchise. Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham) left the main series to go on a crazy adventure with a deadly virus and super-humans who were genetically enhanced.

Johnson and Statham were not announced to be in Fast & Furious 9, which is the first main F&F movie since the Hobbs & Shaw movie.
F9 Post-Credits Scene Explained
How many people in your cinema stayed for the end credits of F9, the tenth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise? I am certain that everyone did in mine.
This is because, with the return of summer blockbusters, we’ve all recalled our Pavlovian dog training and stayed for a treat after the film ended. And F9 just gave a juicy one too.
Deckard Shaw, portrayed by Jason Statham, punches a full-sized punching bag till his knuckles presumably bleed in a drab gym/vaguely sinister hideout. Then we realize that he has a wretched wretching wrapped up inside the target.
Full disclosure: I was uncertain as to whether or not that was Otto, the sniveling, silver-spooned traitor who worked with John Cena’s Jakob in F9. Honestly, he was too bloody to identify, but whatever he is, he’s having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Regardless, it is not the purpose of this scene. This is to inform you that Deckard Shaw is still engaging in Deckard Shaw antics.
Even after saving the world alongside Luke Hobbs in the spinoff film, Shaw is still not a nice person, it turns out.
A moment later, though, the former archvillain hears a tap at the door, indicating that perhaps it is beneficial to be reminded of such things. Who might it be?
Not anyone else except Sung Kang’s Han Seoul-Oh! The man he left for dead in Fast & Furious 6 and Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift.
If you don’t recall the specifics of their histories, let’s just assume that they have substantial beef. Han, portrayed by Kang, perished in a horrific accident during a Tokyo drifting race before the third Fast and the Furious film was set in the far future.

Later, we find that Deckard Shaw destroyed his car in retaliation for Han and the FamilyTM putting Deck’s little brother Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) in the hospital. Therefore, he forces Han off the road and calls Dom Toretto so that he can hear the explosion that is about to envelop poor Han.
However, we now know, courtesy to F9, that the accident was a double hoax. Han wanted to use it to fake his own death while working for Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), who was helping Han protect a young orphan whose blood carried the secret codes to a satellite program that could take over the planet.
So Han “died” and Deckard Shaw’s face was smashed when he fought in combat with Dominic Toretto while wielding wrenches as though they were broadswords. Poor Shaw never grasped that “the street always wins in a street brawl.”
And yet… despite the fact that the family sent Shaw to prison as their own act of revenge on Han’s behalf, they would aid Shaw’s escape in the next film due to convoluted narrative mechanics I will not detail here.
Afterward, they invite him to the barbecue. Although Shaw spared Dom’s young son to earn this invitation, he still murdered a family member. However, for at least two films, Fast and the Furious intended for you to forget this.
It angered quite a few fans, and it irritated Justin Lin, who co-created Han with Kang long before he directed a Fast and Furious film. Yes, Han makes his debut in Lin’s second film, Better Luck Tomorrow (2002). Lin’s decision to return to the Fast and Furious franchise was prompted by The Fate of the Furious’ disregard for the character.
Lin told Esquire a year ago, “That was a terrible move on [F8].” “Han is unique. It made absolutely no sense, and as an Asian-American, it shook me to my core. You’re like, ‘Wait, did you just reduce us to a character you don’t even address? Which nobody gives a crap about anymore? “Are we returning to the Long Duk Dong scum?”

Lin returned to the series he made famous with the intention of delivering justice to Han. However, it was never shown that Dom and company knew Han was alive the entire time, which makes their relationship with Shaw in the previous film even stranger. However, the final sequence of the titles indicates that bringing Han back from the dead is only the beginning of the franchise’s penance.
What does the scene after the credits set up? Han and the man who attempted to send him to the morgue had a heart-to-heart, and possibly a fist-to-fist. If Shaw wants to be a true member of the family, he must earn it. The expression on his face implies it will be arduous.
Is Dwayne Johnson in Fast & Furious 9?
Though we briefly check in on Deckard Shaw in Fast 9, his old sparring buddy Hobbs is absent, which may not be surprising considering stories of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s conflicts in The Fate of the Furious.
In the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, the former federal agent rediscovers his roots and takes his daughter Sam (Eliana Su’a) to Samoa to meet his family.
Hobbs isn’t even mentioned in the next Fast movie. He didn’t halt Jakob Toretto’s plot in Fast 9, so perhaps he was still relaxing? Again, we hope Hobbs returns to the franchise for a Fast finale.
