So far, Batman is the most popular movie of 2022. Does it have a scene after the credits, as every other superhero movie has for years? Well…kinda.
Matt Reeves, who directed The Batman, deserves credit for not following in the footsteps of 2008’s Iron Man and adding a scene after the credits that tease the next Batman project, whatever it may be. But this is still a superhero movie that Warner Bros. hopes will be the start of a new cinematic universe, so I guess he had to add something.
And we’re not talking about the scene at the end of the movie where the Joker may or may not be. Batman has a real bit after the credits, but you probably wouldn’t call it a full scene.
Does The Batman Have a Post-Credits Scene?
Unlike most modern superhero movies, “The Batman” doesn’t have a scene after the credits that set up a sequel. So if the only thing you’re worried about is missing a cameo from a possible new villain or an “I’m here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative” moment, there’s nothing like that. But if you stay for the end credits, you’ll get to see a fun little extra.
“So, during the movie, the Riddler, as he always does, leaves clues that can help Batman solve his crimes.” Eventually, these clues lead Batman to talk to the Riddler directly through an anonymous chat app with a plain black screen and bright green text, like old PCs from the 1970s and 1980s that inspired the “digital rain” effect in “The Matrix.”
As Batman and the Riddler wait for each other to answer, the screen just flashes a symbol:?>. In Java programming, this symbol is called an “unbounded wildcard.” As soon as Batman figures out what the Riddler’s latest clue means, the bad guy quickly signs off by typing “Goodbye.”

Fans of “The Batman” who stay in their seats after the credits will see a similar sign-off. There is no voiceover or extra footage. Instead, there is just a black screen with the word “Goodbye” typed on it, as if the whole movie was a message from The Riddler.
But, as we said, “The Batman” does set up future installments. It just makes sure to do that in the last few minutes of the movie.
