With iMessage on an iPhone, it’s much simpler than you might expect to remove someone from a group text chat. If you’re communicating with a group via iMessage and realize that one of the members no longer belongs there, you can potentially stop receiving their messages.
This guide will teach you how to manage your group’s membership, including how to ban users, add new ones, mute members, and deal with trolls.
How to Remove Someone From an iMessage Group Conversation
When you join a group that is constantly communicating and doing things, it can be a hassle. The iPhone makes it easy to remove someone from a text message group, even if the corresponding options are a little hard to find.
Restrictions
Keep in mind that everyone in the group chat must be using iMessage (blue chat bubbles) for this to operate; traditional SMS or MMS group chats will not support this (green chat bubbles). To access Remove, there must be at least three additional participants in the group conversation.
If Any of The Following Conditions Hold True:
There are fewer than three people in your group chat.
There’s a person in your address book who’s utilizing SMS; even an iPhone can do this, making them invisible to the “Remove” button because they appear blue.
The user is not running Apple’s macOS.

Taking Someone Off of A Group Chat
- Assuming the following, this is how to unsubscribe someone from an iMessage group:
- Launch the iMessage application and navigate to the relevant group conversation.
- Select the icon cluster at the very top of the iMessage menu.
- Click the I that appears to the right to see who else is in the group.
- In order to delete a contact, swipe left on their name until the delete button shows on the right, and then tap it. The ‘Remove’ option may not be accessible via swiping if the preceding caveat is applicable.
- When prompted, choose the option to delete.
- When you do this, that person will be immediately removed from your chat. If “Remove” is not an option, you’ll have to start a new conversation without the bothersome participant. If you switch to the new group and stop sending messages to the old one, the chat history will stay on your phone but they will stop receiving any new ones.
Disconnecting from A Group iMessage
Given the aforementioned conditions, you can remove yourself from an iMessage group. Here’s what to do if someone unintentionally adds you to a group you don’t want to be a part of:
- Just like previously, launch the group iMessage by clicking the tiny I icon next to the members’ photos.
- Look for the option to “Leave this conversation” toward the bottom of the page.
- If you still don’t see this choice, it could be because not everyone in the group is using iMessage or because your group is too small to meet the requirements we outlined above.
A New Member to the Group iMessage
The good news is that you can always add a new contact later if you realize you forgot someone. The same somewhat odd requirements as up top apply, so if there is an SMS user in the group, you won’t be able to pull this off.
- Navigate to the resource page in the same way we did above. Select the plus sign (+) next to “Add Contact.”
- Select the contact, and then add them to the group as you normally would.
It Is Possible to Mute an iMessage Thread
- You can mute the notifications if you want to take a break from the conversation without really leaving it. Avoiding an argument and unnecessary effort is the best option.
- Using your iPhone, launch the group chat by tapping the profile picture circle at the top of the screen.
- When the option to see who is in the group displays, tap the I button.
- A hide alerts option should appear at the group window’s footer; select it.
- This will prevent your phone from sending you notifications about ongoing conversations.

Discourage Communication
When everything else fails, blocking a person may be your only option. If you’re stuck in a spammer group that you didn’t join, blocking the spammer might be your only choice.
- You can block a specific member of the group from sending you messages.
- In order to join the group discussion, please launch the chat app on your iPhone. Then, at the very top of the page, select the contact group.
- To see who else is a part of the group, click the blue I for Info button in the upper right.
- Choose the offending contact from the drop-down menu.
- The option to block this caller will appear.
- Just confirm by clicking “Block Contact.”
