Early Years

The oldest of three kids, she is. Her mother worked as a secretary, and her father sold insurance. Although her family was Protestant, they did not adhere to a strong set of religious principles.
They attended church and Sunday school. Her family relocated to Rockville, Maryland, in 1967, where she attended Wheaton High School and Randolph Junior High. At the age of 13, Jett acquired her first guitar.
She began taking guitar lessons, but she quickly stopped since the teacher continued attempting to teach her traditional music. After that, her family relocated to West Covina, California, which gave Jett the chance to pursue her musical inclinations.
Soon after the relocation, her parents got divorced, and she decided to alter her name to Joan Jett because she thought it sounded more rock star-like than her biological name (although she used to claim that “Jett” was her mother’s maiden name).
Jett’s preferred nightclub in Los Angeles was Rodney Bingenheimer’s English Disco which had the glam rock aesthetic she adored.

Joan Jett: Career, Profession
Along with drummer Sandy West, Joan Jett founded the Runaways at the beginning of her career. Later, the band was completed by Jackie Fox, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie, forming the iconic line-up.
In 1976, Jett saw the band Arrows perform the song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” on their weekly UK television program Arrows. They released five albums between 1975 and the spring of 1979 when they split up.

Jett was helped by Laguna to create the Blackhearts. “I encouraged Joanie to forget the band and support herself on the advance money,” Laguna recalled. The only reason the band could continue touring in 1980 was that Laguna was able to receive funding from outside ventures.
A performance at the New York City Palladium turned out to be a turning point. “Long Live the Night,” a song by the band that was written by Jett with Randy Cantor and Michael Caruso in 1990, was featured on the Days of Thunder soundtrack.
In 1991, Jett released Notorious, which included Paul Westerberg of the Replacements and Phil Feit, a former Billy Idol bassist.
Additionally, in 1994, Blackhearts issued the well-received Pure and Simple, which included songs written with Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland, Donita Sparks of L7, and Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill.
