Wilbur joined the renowned Tuskegee Airmen as a pilot in the Army Air Forces during World War II.  Dungy played collegiate football at the University of Minnesota after graduating from Parkside High School in 1973.

In 1975 and 1976, he was the quarterback for the Gophers and their most valuable player. He received the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1977, which is given to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each Big Ten member institution for exhibiting both academic and athletic success throughout their undergraduate experience.
