After her victory in her U.S. Open first match, Naomi Osaka was filled with emotion.
On Tuesday, August 27, Osaka, 26, moved on to the second round after defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2. Osaka wiped her emotions and perspiration from her face with a towel after winning. The tennis player became more obviously distraught as she continued to celebrate her win.
In her interview with media following the game, Osaka stated, “I was trying not to cry when I was walking out.” “I was watching Coco [Gauff] play last year, and I really wanted to take the courts once more. It means so much to me to play this match and be in this environment, even though I wasn’t sure if I could.
The four-time Grand Slam winner Osaka revealed that her experience returning to the U.S. Open this year has been emotional. She said that it was made more sweeter by the sight of all the smiling faces in the stadium supporting her.
Osaka did not compete in the competition the previous year because she was on maternity leave following the July 2023 birth of her 13-month-old daughter Shai with partner Cordae.
“Seeing kids come and watch me play and just remember that I was a kid made me very emotional because I grew up here,” the woman remarked. “It also made me remember my daughter.” It meant a lot to me to see the stadium filled with people because I was thinking, “Oh, I hope people come watch me play.”
Osaka declared her plan to return to tennis the following year, two months after welcoming her daughter.
In September 2023, she said to ESPN, “I definitely only know this world, the tennis world, and just being away from that for a long time, it was new for me.” The fact that I couldn’t train the way I wanted to and other things like that, combined with the fact that doctors advise against traveling for a certain number of weeks, made me feel as though I was stuck under a lot of restraints. That, I believe, was the situation.
Osaka opened out about the challenges she had with her first pregnancy a few months later. The athlete disclosed that she was in labor for more than 12 hours and that her test results were positive for Group B streptococcus, a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis or sepsis in neonates.
People may not realize how difficult pregnancy is. Nobody actually discusses it as extensively, she said in a December 2023 interview with In Style. You kind of think going into it, ‘Oh, this is this lovely journey.'” However, it’s a little rough.
