Although Freddie Prinze Jr. hasn’t officially stated he will be returning to I Know What You Did Last Summer, he assures us he’s doing his best.
The 48-year-old Prinze Jr. exclusively told Us Weekly, “Nothing’s a lock until there’s ink on paper, until the contract’s signed, but I’m definitely talking to them,” in reference to his upcoming movie The Girl in the Pool.
We’ll try to make it work if we can, because I know they want to make everything work and I know I want everything to work. Nonetheless, we must ensure that everyone’s schedules work.
“Everyone needs to be satisfied with the script,” he went on. I am acquainted with Jen Robinson, the director [of the reboot], and I think highly of both her as a filmmaker and a person. I believe that this company’s future lies with people like her. Thus, there are numerous positive aspects that motivate me to work on the film.
Even though Prinze Jr. stressed that his comeback isn’t official “until a contract or deal is done,” he is aware that all parties are working toward its realization. “I’m driven, and I’m sure they are too. I am aware that everyone is attempting to make it work. And I hope we succeed,” he remarked.
In the 1997 horror picture, Ray was portrayed by Prinze Jr. alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is now his wife. The narrative centers on four teenage friends who, following a terrible accident, wind up at their little beach town where they are being pursued by a crazy person brandishing a hook.

Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, who portrayed Julie, the last female and Ray’s romantic interest, returned for I Still Know What You Did Last Summer the following year, although Phillippe and Gellar were not included in the follow-up.
In the sequel, Ray and Julie are seen to be blissfully married following a time leap, suggesting that both Prinze Jr. and Hewitt made it through. The last scenes, however, leave viewers hanging as Julie is swept under her bed and screams as an enigmatic hook pulls her under.
I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, the franchise’s third entry, debuted in 2006 but had an entirely new cast and was exclusively made available straight to video. A TV series that Prime Video tried to revive the franchise with in 2021 was canceled after just one season.
Sony revealed earlier this year that Prinze Jr. and Hewitt were in talks to return to their respective roles, and that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be directing a new reboot based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky.
Madelyn Cline and Camila Mendes are in talks to star in the film, along with Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Tony Sarah Pidgeon. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 18, 2025.
Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are in a “holding period” while they await word on their possible involvement, the actress told Us in an interview conducted weeks before the new movie’s confirmation. However, the actress added that she thinks they would both “definitely come back” if the script felt right.
“Hey, I had a great time making those films. Making a horror movie is the most enjoyable thing you can do. It’s the greatest, she said. “Julie James was outstanding.” I would be pleased to do that because I believe there is unfinished business there.
Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are currently preoccupied with other endeavors. Season 8 of Hewitt’s ABC blockbuster 9-1-1 is currently in production, and on Friday, July 26, Prinze Jr.’s new movie The Girl in the Pool opened.
The protagonist of the tale is Thomas, played by Prinze Jr., whose life falls apart after his mistress, Brielle Barbusca, is discovered dead in his swimming pool.
In contrast to his previous roles, such as Ray, Prinze Jr. was eager to delve into the thoughts of a less than morally pure person.
Prinze Jr. told Us, “He’s like this beta personality that just can’t make a decision for himself.” “He’s unruly and unfaithful to his wife. He’s now having an affair. Furthermore, those are all awful things. And I thought that was fantastic. Being able to showcase that kind of persona and what I could accomplish with it excited me, in my opinion.
