About the Deirdre Purcell
Irish author Deirdre Purcell was born in Dublin. Born in 1945, Purcell attended school at Gortnor Abbey in County Mayo. She credited the nuns who resided there with instilling in her a strong work ethic.
Prior to working as a television journalist, she was a permanent member of the Abbey Theatre’s company. Purcell, a former Abbey Theatre performer, played Christine alongside Donal McCann in Drama at Inish, Miss Frost in the theatrical adaptation of The Ginger Man, and Pegeen Mike in The Playboy of the Western World.
In the past, Purcell worked as a journalist for newspapers and television. She has been given the journalism Cross and Benson & Hedges prizes. She lived on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork.
Since October 2009, Purcell has hosted All About the Music on RTÉ Lyric FM. She had previously hosted “It Says in the Papers” on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1. She was the Nine O’Clock News’ first female anchor.
Purcell lived in County Meath with her hubby. She has two boys. When the Irish banking industry crashed in 2008, Purcell was a board member of the Central Bank of Ireland, having been appointed in 2003.

On Monday morning, Deirdre Purcell had a stroke(a loss of blood flow to part of the brain, which damages brain tissue) and died very suddenly. She is remembered by her two sons, Adrian and Simon Weckler, and her husband, Kevin Healy, whom she met at RTÉ.
The Purcell family said in a statement that they were “truly saddened by Deirdre’s untimely death. The day before she died, Deirdre was just as full of ideas, goals, and dreams. Deirdre made friends everywhere she went and will be remembered as a lively, smart, and caring friend.
