When they decided to start a rap group, each member gave himself a crazy new name (Trugoy the Dove, P.A. Pasemaster Mase, and Posdnuos, respectively). Early in his career, Jolicoeur had a unique look that included African medallions, peace signs, and uneven dreadlocks.

This look was called the “De La Do.” When combined with the positive messages of the group’s first album, 3 Feet High and Rising, the members were called “the hippies of hip hop” by critics and journalists (a title that the group was quick to refute with the release of the second album De La Soul Is Dead in 1991).
