If you liked Army of the Dead a lot, don’t worry. Netflix is very serious about turning the zombie epic into a series. After the first movie ended with an open ending, the streaming giant will make a sequel. Snyder told Polygon, “I know exactly what happens next, and it’s insane.”
The director of Justice League: The Snyder Cut has already wowed fans again with the heist movie Army of Thieves. In that movie, Matthias Schweighofer’s character Ludwig Deiter’s past was explored, and a new group of crooks was introduced.
The emotional link between the first movie and the prequel movie was nice, but fans may not have seen the last of Ludwig just yet. All we know so far about the upcoming Army of the Dead sequel is that both movies are now on Netflix and that a full-fledged zombie universe is on the way.
Army of the Dead 2: Release Date
Fans of zombies will be sad to hear that Army of the Dead 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. But the good news is that the movie is definitely on its way, and we may hear more about when it might come out sooner rather than later.
The Hollywood Reporter said in 2021 that Zack Snyder would start working on Planet of the Dead after finishing his other upcoming science fiction movie for Netflix, Rebel Moon.
The newspaper said that Snyder will spend more time in the Army-verse. “He is working on a sequel with the co-writer of the first movie, Shay Hatten. This is something he would do after Rebel Moon.”
Since filming for Rebel Moon started in April 2022 and there will be a post-production stage, it seems like work on Army of the Dead 2 won’t begin until at least 2023.

But don’t put too much stock in that prediction, since we don’t know when Rebel Moon will come out. Army of the Dead 2 could come out in late 2023 or early 2024, depending on how Rebel Moon makes it.

At the end of the movie, there aren’t many people left, so there won’t be many of them back for the sequel. Depending on where Planet of the Dead takes place (more on this below), we might not even see those actors play their roles again.

What is the Expected Pot of Army of the Dead 2?
We’ve already gone over everything that happens in Army of the Dead, so let’s just talk about the end, which sets up a direct sequel. Ludwig locked Vanderohe in the vault. After the nuclear explosion, Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) comes out of the wreckage with some of the money, which is more than the other crew members got since they are mostly dead.
He goes to an airport and uses the money to pay for a private plane ride to Mexico City. Everything seems to be going well for him. But Vanderohe does something funny. When he goes to the bathroom to clean up, he sees a zombie bite on his arm.
In the movie, we never see him get bitten, but it probably happened when Vanderohe and Zeus were fighting outside the vault. That means he’ll turn into an Alpha, which is bad news for the whole world since the plane is about to land in Mexico City.
You might have been surprised by Vanderohe’s lighthearted reaction when he found out he’d been bitten, but Omari Hardwick has said that he wanted to play it as a “question mark.”
“He looks back at himself at the end and thinks, “Wow, OK, so do any of the ideas I put out work now?” Do they save me, or do they just make me feel good?’ “he added. Vanderohe would have been bitten a long time ago, so who knows? Maybe he got lucky and is now immune, or maybe his transformation was just put off to make the cliffhanger work.
No matter what happened, the next book will probably start with this cliffhanger or maybe with what happens after Vanderohe lands in Mexico City. Since it’s harder to block off than Las Vegas, the second movie could be even bigger than the first.
There are a lot of unanswered questions that could be explored in Army of the Dead 2, such as the robot zombies and the time loop that were already mentioned. “I don’t understand, what’s up with the time loop?” Snyder told Polygon. “Is Tanaka the Devil or God, and we’re just chess pieces in a strange game?”
