When will the third season of His Dark Materials come out? The Golden Compass, which came out in 2007, was a huge disappointment when it tried to adapt Northern Lights, the first book in Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. The fantasy movie got bad reviews and did not do well at the box office. After more than a decade, BBC and HBO have finally made a great TV show that does the franchise justice.
The first two seasons of His Dark Materials were based on the books Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife. Lyra Belacqua, played by Dafne Keen, goes on an adventure with her loyal daemon, Pan, that takes them to different universes. In the main universe, a religious group called the Magisterium is in charge. They want to get rid of a strange substance called Dust.
The fantasy show’s second season ended on a dramatic note, though, when Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) drugged and kidnapped Lyra and promised to keep her safe from a prophecy that said she would become the new Eve (yes, that Adam and Eve). Coulter thinks she is stopping the end of the world. Fans are eager to find out what will happen to Lyra, and they have good reason to be. Here’s everything we know about when Season 3 of His Dark Materials will come out.
His Dark Materials Season 3: Release Date
If you live in the US, we have good news: season 3 of His Dark Materials will be on HBO and HBO Max from Monday, December 5th to Monday, December 26th. On December 18, all eight episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer.
We don’t know for sure, but since the year is almost over, we’d guess that the schedule would be pretty similar to the one used in the US. We will be on the lookout for proof of this.
Work on His Dark Materials Season 3 began in Wales in 2021. Executive producer Jane Tranter said, “The Amber Spyglass is the most difficult of Philip Pullman’s books to adapt for TV, but with our world-class creative team in Cardiff, no challenge is too big.”

She also said, “This season is both a grand adventure and a love and truth story. Jack, Francesca, and Amelia’s scripts capture the brilliance of Philip’s worlds, and we are joined by our much-loved existing cast and some very talented newcomers to the series.
So get ready, because this is going to be an epic battle that will decide the fate of reality itself.
Who Will be in the Cast of His Dark Materials Season 3?
As Season 3 of His Dark Materials wraps up this multiverse story, everyone needs to do their part. Dafne Keen, who played Lyra Belacqua in Logan, is back to lead the show as Lyra Belacqua, and Amir Wilson plays Will Parry.
Ruth Wilson will be back as Mrs. Coulter, and James McAvoy will be back as Asriel Belacqua. It will be interesting to see how their relationship has changed in the last season. Will Keen is also coming back as Cardinal MacPhail, and so is Simone Kirby as Dr. Mary Malone.
Serafina Pekkala, the famous witch queen, will also be back in Season 3, with Ruta Gedmintas playing her again. But to answer the question everyone has been waiting for, yes, Joe Tandberg is coming back as Iorek Byrnison’s voice actor and motion-capture performer! The polar bear warrior is back, and if he dies, we’ll start a riot.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who was on LOST and Game of Thrones, is joining the show as Commander Ogun. Amber Fitzgerald-Woolf will play Ama, and Jamie Ward will play Father Gomez. On the other hand, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Simon Harrison, and Chipo Chung play Balthamos, Baruch, and Xaphania, three rebellious angels.

Agent Salmakia will be played by Fleabag star Sian Clifford, and Commander Roke will be played by Jonathan Aris. They are both Gallivespian spies, which is a surprise. The fact that they look like tiny people is what makes them interesting. This will definitely make for some interesting screen time.
His Dark Materials Season 3: Expected Plot
The third season of His Dark Materials is based on The Amber Spyglass, the third and last book in Philip Pullman’s trilogy. The Magisterium is looking for Lyra because the theocracy has decided that she must die so that humanity doesn’t fall and repeat Adam and Eve’s original sin.
All of this is happening while Asriel’s army and the forces of heaven are fighting, so there’s a lot at stake. All of this doesn’t even include the fact that Lyra and Will Parry go to the World of the Dead to find Roger, which is probably what the Season 2 post-credits scene was alluding to.
The book also talks about the history of angels and how they got to be so powerful to begin with. Even though the book has been on the shelves for 20 years, we won’t tell you how it all ends. But it’s safe to say that some people will cry by the end of the last episode.
James McAvoy talked to the One Show about the last season and hinted that a war was coming. “What else can I say? McAvoy told The One Show, “It’s war.” “At the end of the second season, we kind of declare war on the Kingdom of Heaven, so it gets pretty dirty, and there will be a lot of fights and explosions and all that. But the story is really about a little girl and a little boy… and not the big-headed adults.”

Even though Phillip Pullman has written a prequel trilogy called The Book of Dust, it would be easy for BBC and HBO to turn it into a follow-up show. The series adds to the world, and the second book starts with Lyra being 20 years old. So who knows, maybe Dafne Keen will come back for more.
