The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs said in a letter to lawmakers this week that there isn’t enough money in the bank to support every applicant for aid.
Texas has reportedly gotten more than $1.7 billion in government assistance since December to help low-income families pay their rent and electricity bills, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.
TDHCA, on the other hand, asserts that the overall funding for the rent relief program exceeds $1.9 billion, and it is asking Treasury for additional monies so that it can reopen applications.
Texas has spent roughly $1.2 billion on rent subsidies for 209,000 households, and the state has committed an additional $108 million for another 19,000 homes. Applications received before the deadline on Friday will be considered for $680 million from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (TDHCA).
“This step will be to ensure that all of those applications that have been fully completed will be assessed and financed if they fit requirements,” the agency wrote in a letter to the state House Urban Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
That surprised the committee’s chairman, Democratic state representative Philip Cortez of San Antonio. Bobby Wilkinson, the agency’s director, predicted that the money to assist poor families would not run out until March during a meeting with Cortez last week.
