Career
Mark Spitz began swimming at 6 in Sacramento, California. At age 9, he began training with Sherm Chavoor at Sacramento’s Arden Hills Swim Club.
Ten-year-old him held one world age-group record and 17 national records. At 14, he began training at Santa Clara Swim Club under George F Haines.
During 1964-1968, he trained with Haines at SCSC and Santa Clara High. In 1966, at age 16, he won the AAU 100-meter butterfly.
The following year, he set his first world record in the 400-meter freestyle in California (4:10.60). 1965 was his first international competition.
He won four gold medals and was voted the best athlete. He won five gold medals in 1967 and set a world record.
He trained hard and imagined he’d win six gold medals in Mexico City in 1968. He only won two team gold medals in the 4100 and 4200 freestyle relays.
He also won silver and bronze in the 100-meter butterfly and freestyle.
After his Olympic disappointment, he became a pre-dental student at Indiana University and trained under famed swimming coach Doc Counsilman. Counsilman’s training helped him enhance his form for the 1972 Olympics.
