Joy joined the ABC daytime talk program The View, co-created by Barbara Walters, as one of the first panelists in 1997.
Joy began as a guest co-host on days when Walters was unavailable, but she eventually became a regular member of the show. Joy’s Comedy Corner, which she hosted on occasion, included both known and up-and-coming comedians.
Star Jones, a former co-host of the show, had a well-publicized spat with Joy, and on March 27, 2006, Jones phoned the show to discuss a prior procedure she had had. “OK, Star,” Joy said suddenly to Jones after speaking with the show’s co-hosts. That’s all I have to say about you at the moment. Let’s get started. Bye. Maintain a perky tit!” “You’re still a bitch,” Jones answered.
Following a decade of nominations, Joy and her co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd, and Barbara Walters won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host in August 2009.
Joy confirmed her departure from the program at the conclusion of the current season on March 7, 2013. “It felt like the ideal moment…,” she told Deadline in an interview.
You get to a point when you ask yourself, “Do I really want to do this?” I’ve been ignoring my standup because I’ve been working on a play.”
On August 9, 2013, she held her last presentation, which included a homage to Joy in the manner of “This Is Your Life.”
Joy continued to guest co-host in 2014 and 2015 following her departure in 2013, and ABC announced on August 25, 2015, that she will return as a regular co-host beginning with the 19th season debut on September 8, 2015.
She drew a lot of flak for calling Bill Clinton’s sexual assault victims “tramps” on October 10, 2016. Joy quickly apologized for using a sexual slur.
Behar accused Vice President Mike Pence of having a mental condition when he revealed that he hears Jesus talk to him on February 13, 2018. Joy subsequently apologized to Vice President Mike Pence for her “anti-Christian” comments.
