The scene after the credits for The Marvels doesn’t answer a big question: who is this other Maria Rambeau? Maria has had a unique MCU journey, showing up in three different worlds. She first showed up in Captain Marvel as Carol Danvers’ best friend and fellow fighter pilot.
While Rambeau did die in the main MCU, that wasn’t the last time she showed up. Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, Monica Rambeau, who had changed into Captain Marvel in a different world, appeared with other heroes like Captain Carter.
The Rambeau that showed up in the scene after the credits of The Marvels, on the other hand, is definitely not the same person. Maria and her daughter Monica seem to be about the same age, but Maria has no idea who Monica is.
It’s also clear that she has something to do with the X-Men since Beast is there and talks about Charles Xavier. Thanks to Marvel Comics, we may know more about who this Maria is.
Maria Rambeau Is Two-Tone
Once The Mavels is over, Monica Rambeau wakes up in a different world to find the person she thinks is her mother. But Maria Rambeau doesn’t know Monica, and Beast walks in soon after and calls Maria “Binary.” It’s clear that this version of Maria from a different world is not at all like the main MCU version.
Still, she has a lot to do with Captain Marvel’s past. In Marvel Comics, Binary is not a different character. Instead, she is Carol Danvers’s other personality after she lost her powers and was used as a test subject by an alien group called The Brood.
Carol’s body had hidden skills that the Brood woke up, turning her into the hero Binary. Carol later came back as Ms. Marvel and then Captain Marvel. Recently, a copy of Carol Danvers has shown up in Marvel Comics. She is also known as Binary.
No one seems to know if the MCU Binary has the same past or if she is a totally different character. If her background is like Carol’s version of Binary, that would explain why she is with the X-Men.
The History of Binary With the X-Men
The X-Men from Marvel Comics have a lot to do with Binary’s past. Carol Danvers joined the X-Men after being written out of The Avengers in a story that caused a lot of stir. When Rogue struck Carol and took her powers, Carol at first lost them.
These changes made Rogue stronger and able to fly, but they took away Carol’s talents. Carol stayed with the X-Men until The Brood captured her and woke her up with her new skills.
Carol changed her name to Binary and joined the X-Men again after she got her new skills. She stayed with the X-Men until Rogue joined them too. After this, Carol quit the X-Men because she was still mad at Rogue for taking her powers. Carol would eventually get her powers back and become Ms. Marvel again.
Why Binary is a Member of the X-men and What Her Future Might Hold in the MCU?
From the short scene in The Marvels, it’s not clear if this Binary is a different Maria Rambeau who has switched places with Carol Danvers. Marvel could have easily made a new character with a different story by using the name and outfit from the first Binary.
Binary seems to be an X-Men member in this world, so she might just be a mutant. Some comic book stories have been changed in the MCU, so it’s possible that this Binary is a new character.
It’s also not clear from The Marvels whether this is the old Fox X-Men universe or a new one. The fact that Kelsey Grammer plays Beast could mean that it’s the Fox Universe, but he looks very different. Most likely, this is the world of the X-Men that will join the MCU after Deadpool 3.
What an interesting character relationship there would be between Binary and Monica Rambeau if she stayed. Marvel doesn’t have any X-Men projects coming out soon, so it might be a while before The Marvels answers the questions it asked.
