Though the show normally takes great care to finish up its whodunit plots, Only Murders in the Building leaves one unanswered question: what happened to Oliver’s dog, Winnie?
In the television series Only Murders in the Building, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez play three true-crime podcasters who, paradoxically, keep getting entangled in murder cases involving people they know.
Short portrays Oliver Putnam, an ambitious but unsuccessful Broadway director, Martin plays Charles-Haden Savage, the semi-retired star of an old detective show from the 1990s, and Gomez portrays Mabel Mora, an aspiring artist and amateur investigator.
On the streaming portal Hulu, Only Murders in the Building has been a huge smash since its 2021 debut. As Viacom did with its Paramount+ hit Yellowstone on CBS, Disney is now airing the first season of the show on ABC in an effort to draw in new viewers.
Oliver’s cute bulldog, Winnie, is at the center of a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of the first batch of episodes that show on ABC. While the Winnie cliffhanger in season 1 of Only Murders in the Building is resolved in a later episode, the most of the show’s cliffhangers are eventually resolved. There are enough hints, though, to put it together.
What Happened to Winnie in Only Murders In The Building?
Oliver has had Winnie, his cherished pet bulldog, since before the beginning of the series. Instead of walking Winnie on a leash, Oliver pushes her about in a stroller like a baby because he enjoys spoiling her.
Oliver discovers a threatening note pinned to Tim Kono’s apartment door in season 1, episode 3, “How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?,” while he, Charles, and Mabel attempt to identify the murderer. Furthermore, Oliver believes that the person who left the note and killed Tim must also be the one who poisoned Winnie.
Does Oliver’s Dog Die in Only Murders In The Building?
Fortunately, Winnie didn’t die in the following episode, despite the cliffhanger at the end of episode 3. Thankfully, Winnie survived the poisoning, as is revealed at the start of season 1, episode 4, “The Sting.” Oliver was able to get Winnie to his veterinarian son Will in time to save her after she was poisoned.
Winnie recovered quickly after receiving treatment from Will for the poisoning. As she recovered from the poisoning, Oliver’s son Will took care of her in his capacity as a veterinarian. Naturally, Oliver was extremely relieved that his cherished bulldog survived.
Because it increased the stakes and personalized the inquiry, the poisoning remained a significant story aspect. Oliver suspected Sting of being involved for Tim’s death after spotting him in the elevator just before discovering the letter on his door.
Oliver was convinced that Sting was the one who had poisoned his dog throughout episode 4, and he sought out Charles and Mabel’s assistance in locating concrete proof that Sting had killed Tim in addition to poisoning Winnie.
Although Tim and Sting had a contentious argument and Sting was Tim’s former stockbroker, he wasn’t the one who killed him.
Who Poisoned Winnie in Only Murders In The Building?
By the conclusion of Only Murders in the Building season 1, the mystery surrounding Tim Kono’s death had been resolved, but the identity of the person who poisoned Winnie the dog was still unknown. Although Jan was a poisoner, it appeared that she was more likely to poison a person than a defenseless dog.
Teddy Dimas may have left the note on Oliver’s door because he frequently used threats to get his point across, but there is no proof that he is heartless enough to poison a dog. Although Detective Daniel Kreps is undoubtedly suspicious, the chronology of the series does not support Kreps being the poisoning’s perpetrator.
Mabel mentions a few “loose ends” that are left hanging at the conclusion of season one of Only Murders in the Building. The fact that the identity of Winnie’s poisoner and the person who placed the threatening messages on Oliver and Jan’s apartment doors was still unknown was probably a self-aware allusion to this.
Because Charles, Oliver, and Mabel have only recently begun their podcast and have no investigation expertise, the authors might have left several questions and open ends. It makes natural that they wouldn’t be able to wrap up every loose end in their initial murder probe.
