MTV advertises the show as authentic, of course. Both the cheats and the cheatees are actual people. How authentic are these contrived brief interventions, one could wonder? Really, nobody knows.
The fact that the cheater somehow already has a microphone on them when they are discovered adds to the whole suspicious situation. Would it really be acceptable for them to be mic’d up for the occasion if they were genuinely cheating?
It’s highly probable that they deceive them in some way to get them to wear the microphone. However, if someone were competent at cheating, they wouldn’t consent to being videotaped while doing it in case their partner saw the recording.
It’s probably a combination of scripted and unscripted, but then, most reality TV is.
Fans aren’t even trying to pretend that the writing has persuaded them. IMDb reviewers frequently criticize the show by pointing out its staged aspects.
“It didn’t take long to see that the show was scripted,” one viewer commented. The actors found it difficult to bring the tales to life because of how badly written they are. They were a complete failure! After chuckling at the poor acting for a while, you decide that enough is enough.
The idea that it’s split 50/50 between real and false is supported by another admirer. They even believe that some of the crying and acting are really authentic.
“It’s definitely not wholly authentic. The way businesses agree to install surveillance equipment conveniently and the manner the alleged hidden cameras move as though operated by a person are suspicious.
The victims’ responses seem irrational, and it’s strange that they consistently find evidence of the accused’s guilt when they make sexual remarks. Even though I keep watching, I know it’s contrived.”
The show is performing well in the ratings regardless of whether it is real or not. The network gave the show another season despite the harsh IMDb evaluations because they thought it had enough potential to be worth the effort.
On July 18, 2023, the episode “earned its second-highest rating,” according to Shadow and Act. “It had a 36% higher rating and a 42% higher share than the season premiere.”
