After Jordan Chiles was denied the bronze medal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Ana Barbosu responded to the announcement.
I’m thinking of you, Jordan, Sabrina [Maneca-Voinea]. I understand how you are feeling since I have experienced similar things,” the 18-year-old Barbosu stated on Sunday, August 11, via Instagram Story. “But I’m confident you’ll return stronger.”
“I sincerely hope that all three of us will stand on the same podium at the next Olympics,” she continued. My real dream is this.
Barbosu claimed that if “the persons in charge had respected the regulation,” “this situation” would not have arisen.
The Romanian gymnast remarked, “We athletes are not to be blamed and the hate directed toward us is painful.” “I wanted to bring the Olympic Games of Paris 2024 to a close in the true spirit of Olympicism, the world’s greatest virtue.”
On Monday, August 5, three athletes competed in the women’s floor exercise final: Chiles, Barbosu, and Maneca-Voinea. The three competitors were competing for bronze behind Simone Biles of the United States of America and Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.
Just moments before Team USA submitted an inquiry regarding the difficulty of one of Chiles’ jumps, Barbosu was first declared the third-place winner.
Chiles’ score increased from 13.666 to 13.766, surpassing Barbosu for the podium finish, as the judges concurred with the inquiry. It was the first time three Black gymnasts had appeared on the Olympic podium, with Chiles, 23, coming in third.
Team Romania inquired about Team USA’s request the next day, stating that it was submitted beyond the deadline. On Saturday, August 10, the CAS granted the plea, returning Chile’s score to 13.666 and stating that the IOC had the final say over whether to deduct medals from competitors.
“The IOC announced on Sunday that, following the CAS ruling on the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the subsequent ranking adjustment by the International Gymnastics Federation, Ana Barbosu will be awarded the bronze medal.
They are coordinating with Romania’s NOC for the reallocation ceremony and with the USOPC concerning the return of the bronze medal.”
Meanwhile, the US Olympic Committee intends to file an appeal of the ruling.
