Michael Thomas Grant Will Join the Cast of ‘grey’s Anatomy’ in Season 21 as the Show’s New Gay Chaplain

Michael Thomas Grant has joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy for season 21.

On Thursday, August 8, TV Line revealed that 30-year-old Grant will be appearing in the venerable ABC drama as James, the hospital’s new “openly gay Episcopal” chaplain. The source claims that the character “has a particular place in his heart for his younger patients, and his spirituality, warmth, and training make him confident and at ease in any situation.”

Additionally, James will discover that he is “open to love and taking great leaps of faith” and finds himself at a crossroads.

On his social media, Grant confirmed the casting news.

“Hi, it’s me!” On Thursday, Grant shared a screenshot of an article with The Fray’s song “How to Save a Life” playing in the background on his Instagram Story. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this cast!”

Grant’s most well-known role prior to joining Grey’s Anatomy was that of Leif in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which costarred Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newel, and Lauren Graham.

After the abrupt cancellation of the series in 2021, Grant returned to the character in the holiday film Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, which concluded the plot of the show.

After Jake Borelli’s abrupt departure from Grey’s Anatomy, there were rumors last month that the show was going to bring on a gay character. Since season 14, Borelli, 33, has portrayed the beloved Dr. Levi Schmitt.

In May of last year, Deadline revealed that Borelli was leaving the show after seven seasons. To conclude his journey, Borelli will, nevertheless, make multiple appearances in season 21 episodes.

There are more things for fans to anticipate in the upcoming season of Grey’s than just Grant joining the cast. It was revealed that Jason George would be returning to Grey’s as a series regular after the Station 19 series finale.

George, 52, debuted on Grey’s in 2010 and played Dr. Ben Warren in a recurrent role during season 6. Later, from seasons 12 to 14, he was promoted to the main cast. In 2018, George left the medical drama for the firefighter spinoff series after eight years on the show.

Despite playing a major role on Station 19, George frequently appeared as a guest star on the mothership series because he is married to Chandra Wilson’s character, Miranda Bailey. Wilson and Ellen Pompeo are two of the few original cast members that are still involved in the show.

Although Pompeo, 54, temporarily stepped away from Grey’s on-screen persona in season 20, he continued to serve as the show’s narrator and executive producer. Deadline, however, revealed in July that the actress would get more screen time in season 21, with at least seven episodes slated to include her.
