At the forthcoming Venice International picture Festival, Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom, a ground-breaking virtual reality picture, has been nominated for the “immersive” category. As a result, it will be the first work of media in the huge Real Robot franchise to be screened at the occasion and to be awarded for artistic vision.
The award was made public on the Silver Phantom page of gundam.info. The film is also included on the official website of the Venice Festival as one of 26 that will compete with one another in the Venice Immersion segment of the event.
The creative team has been more than delighted to point out that the movie’s artistic characteristics are demonstrated by its acknowledgment by the event, regardless of the outcome.
Nomination of Silver Phantom as a Feather in Gundam’s Cap
The immersive 3D animated film of Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom, which will be released commercially later this year, is displayed using headsets made by Meta Platforms (previously Facebook), namely the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 models.
The film, which takes place in the year 96 of the universal century, employs virtual reality (VR) technology to let viewers see portions of the ninety-minute film from the viewpoint of an unidentified protagonist, making them seem inside digital sets.
Bandai-Namco Filmworks and Atlas V, a French production business specializing in virtual and augmented reality experiences, collaborated on the film, contributing their vast experience.
There has been a slight revival of the Gundam franchise recently. While Witch From Mercury, the most current anime series, was regarded well by fans of the series, Gundam Seed Freedom just shattered Japanese box office records.
Amidst all of this, Silver Phantom’s nomination is yet another triumph for the most renowned mech franchise globally.
Founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival globally. Launched in 2017, the Venice Immersive part focuses on “Extended Reality” media and is held on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, which is referred to as “Venice Immersive Island” during the festival.
Between August 28 and September 7, Silver Phantom will be exhibited along with 26 other competitive films and 30 “out of competition” films. The “Grand Prize,” “Special Jury Prize,” or the “Achievement Prize” could go to the nominated movies.
The film is being sold for pre-order on the Meta Quest online store, even though it is not yet accessible for viewing.
Director Kenichi Suzuki expressed his thoughts on the nomination, saying, “Gundam is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, and we are proud that this VR movie, which lets anyone experience Universal Century, will be highly exciting content.
I’d love to tell my younger self that I could take a leading role in the Universal Century world.” Although the VR format might initially seem niche or gimmicky, its prestigious nomination highlights Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom’s significance within Gundam’s extensive collection of critically acclaimed anime.
