You need a PAN card number to pay your taxes. The number helps the income tax office find you, ensure the information on your tax return is correct, and rule out any risk of tax fraud.
Cards called PAN cards are given out by the Income Tax Department. It has a 10-digit alphanumeric number that is unique to you. There is only one PAN card number for each person. It is made up of 10 letters and numbers.

Apply Online and Offline for a PAN Card

Apply Online for a PAN Card
You can apply for a PAN online through NSDL or UTITSL. The income tax office has given both of these portals approval to make PAN cards and change information on them.
Here are the steps you need to take to make an online PAN card application:
- Step 1: To apply online for a PAN card, go to the appropriate NSDL or UTIITSL website.
- Step 2: Go to the website’s home page and choose the “New PAN” option.
- Step 3: Whether an individual is an Indian citizen, an NRE/NRI, or an OCI, they must choose the new PAN Card Form 49A.
- Step 4: Fill out this form with the person’s information.
- Step 5: After submitting the form, the applicant must additionally pay the processing cost online using a demand draft to start the form’s processing.
- Step 6: The 15-digit acknowledgment number is found on the last page that is produced upon payment of the fees and submission of the completed PAN Form 49A.
- Step 7: After submitting Form 49A online, the acknowledgment form and the relevant papers must be couriered to the NSDL PAN office within 15 days.
- Step 8: The card is created following the NSDL PAN verification and the acknowledgment form is couriered to the NSDL office for PAN no. verification. Within 15 days, the customer’s address listed on the form will get the physical PAN card.
To get a PAN card online through the UTIITSL Portal, do the following:
Step 1: Visit the UTIITSL PAN card application page.
Select “PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI” from the list of PAN Services on the UTIITSL page.
Step 2: Choose how you want to apply.
To apply for a PAN card, choose either the “Digital Mode” or the “Physical Mode.” The digital way lets you sign electronically using DSC mode or Aadhaar-based eSignature. The physical mode requires you to send in a printed and signed application form.
Step 3: Fill out the personal and necessary information
Complete the application form correctly and fully, giving all the personal information asked for.
Step 4: Look over the application and send it.
Double-check the information you entered, and then click “Submit” to move on.
Step 5: Make the payment online.
After choosing a good payment method like BillDesk or PayU India, you can pay online with net banking, a debit card, a credit card, or a cash card.
Step 6: proof of payment. Once the payment goes through, print or save a copy of the proof for your records.
The last step is to sign the form and include the pictures.
Print out the form, add two photos that are 3.5 x 2.5 cm, and sign it where it says to.
Step 8: Send in with supporting documents attached.
Please attach copies of your ID, proof of where you live, and proof of your date of birth to the application form that you have filled out. Send these documents to the UTIITSL office closest to you online or by mail to get a new PAN card.
How Can I Apply Offline for A PAN Card?
You can apply for a PAN card in person at the nearest NSDL/UTIITSL center by following these steps:
The first thing you need to do is go to https://www.tin-sdl.com/downloads/pan/download/Form_49A.PDF and print it out.
Step 2: Fill out the application. Add two pictures the size of a passport to the application.
Step 3: Send the fees in the form of a demand draft made out to “NSDL – PAN” and payment to Pune UTTSL.
Step 4: Attach self-attestation copies of your ID, proof of address, and proof of date of birth.
