Robert Marvin Hull OC was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was born on January 3, 1939. He was called “The Golden Jet” because he had blonde hair, was fast on skates, went from one end of the rink to the other, and could shoot the puck at a very high speed. Because of how good he was, an opposing player was often sent to just watch him.
From 1957 to 1980, he played for the Chicago Black Hawks, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Hartford Whalers in both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA).
He won the Hart Memorial Trophy twice as the NHL’s best player and the Art Ross Trophy three times as the NHL’s top scorer. In 1961, he helped the Black Hawks win the Stanley Cup. He also led the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA) to Avco Cup titles in 1976 and 1978.
He had the most goals in the NHL seven times, which is the second most of any player in history. He also had the most goals in the WHA once and was the league’s most valuable-player twice. In 1983, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2003, he was given the Wayne Gretzky International Award. Hull was named one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” of all time in 2017.

In its obituary for Hull, The Washington Post said that rumors that he beat his wife and was racist hurt his reputation. Two of Bobby’s wives said he hurt them physically, and in 1987, he pleaded guilty to hitting a police officer who came to help him and his wife Deborah when they were having a fight, according to a newspaper. In a 2002 ESPN SportsCentury profile, his ex-wife Joanne McKay said that he had once hit her with a shoe.
According to the Post, Bobby also told The Moscow Times in 1998 that Adolf Hitler had some “good ideas.” Bobby said in a statement that he didn’t agree with what was said in the interview and that he was “deeply offended” by the “false statements attributed to me.” The Post also says that Bobby sued The Moscow Times and the Toronto Sun for reprinting the interview.
