How Did Carlos Saura Start His Filmmaking Career

Saura was born on January 4, 1932, in Huesca, which is in northeastern Spain. When the Spanish Civil War started, he was only four years old. His early childhood was deeply affected by the war, and he later became known as a brave critic of the Franco regime who used symbols and allegories in his films to avoid being censored.

In the 1950s, Saura began his filmmaking career with short documentaries. He made his international debut with The Hunt, which had its global premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 1966 and earned him the Silver Bear for Best Director.  The story of three middle-aged warriors reminiscing about their experiences during a rabbit-hunting trip addressed the legacy of the Spanish Civil War. Sam Peckinpah recognized it as a Spanish movie classic and a key influence on his work.

He went to Berlin every year and won the Golden Bear for Deprisa, Deprisa in 1981. In 1967, for Peppermint Frappé, he won his second Silver Bear. Saura also went to Cannes often, but he never won the Palme d’Or.

He made his debut there in 1960 with The Delinquents. He went on to win the bin in 1974, the Grand Prize of the Jury for Cria Cuervos in 1976, and the now-defunct Grand Prix Technique for his Oscar-nominated Carmen in 1983, which was based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel and used music from Georges Bizet’s opera.

He also went down in Cannes history when, in 1968, a group of New Wave directors led by Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard burst into the theatre where Peppermint Frappé was being shown and demanded that it be stopped in support of the popular worker and student protests.

On the website for Cannes, the event is described as follows: “Saura graciously agreed to have his filmstrip aside to make room for the revolution.'” Saura never stopped working, and in September, his movie The Walls Can Talk was shown for the first time at San Sebastian. The director had planned to go to the screening, but he couldn’t because he fell and hurt himself.

Through Saura’s unique point of view, the documentary looked at how art has changed and how it relates to walls as a creative canvas, from the art on cave walls in prehistoric times to urban art in the present day.
