About the Lalitha Lajmi
Lalita Lajmi was born in Calcutta on October 17, 1932. She got her start in painting in the early 1960s by taking part in a group show at Mumbai’s Jehangir Art Gallery. She also held her debut exhibition in 1961 at the same gallery. She had a long career as a painter and built numerous national and international platforms for her shows. She has also shown her art in the US, Germany, and India. She also gave talks in the UK and India in addition to this.
Prithvi Art Gallery, Pundole Art Gallery, Apparao Gallery in Chennai, Pundole Gallery, and many other renowned art galleries had showcased her work. Additionally, she appeared as a painter in the film Taare Zameen Par starring actor Aamir Khan. She did costume designing for an Amol Palekar play, after all. In addition to this, she also contributed as a graphics artist to the Hindi film Aghaat.

Lalita Lajmi, the sister of the late actor and film director Guru Dutt, passed away on February 13 at the age of 90.
Her passing was announced on Twitter on Monday by the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). “With profound regret and sorrow, NGMA, Mumbai, Ministry of Culture, Government of India communicates the news of the passing of eminent artist and printmaker Smt. Lalitha Lajmi, who left for heavenly home this morning,” stated the statement (13.02.2023). Our Sincere Sympathies. RIP.”
There are no unusual circumstances surrounding Lalitha Lajmi’s passing; rather, it appears that she passed away as a result of natural causes.

The late actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt‘s sister, Lalitha Lajmi, made a brief cameo in Aamir Khan’s movie Taare Zameen Par. She acted as the chief guest at the interschool art contest. Aamir Khan Productions, the actor’s production company, has posted some behind-the-scenes photos from the filming days on Instagram.

Mumbai’s Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation has sent its condolences in response to Lalitha Lajmi’s demise. The organization shared a photo of the piece along with the statement,
“We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Lalitha Lajmi’s passing. Lajmi was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Her works had an element of melancholy and performance, seen here in her artwork, ‘Dance of Life and Death.”
