David Jolicoeur Illness and Health Issues
In his final years, Jolicoeur was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was required to wear a LifeVest defibrillator to combat its symptoms. In a special sequence from the music video for “Royalty Capes” from De La Soul’s 2016 album And the Anonymous Nobody, he disclosed his health problems for the first time to the public in November of 2017.
Jolicoeur explained at the beginning of the film how his heart troubles impeded his ability to constantly perform and tour with the band, stating, “[The LifeVest defibrillator] will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix. On February 5, 2023, De La Soul participated in a special performance honoring the 50 Years of Hip-Hop at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, playing “Buddy” from 1988 without Jolicoeur.
