    Stephen King, a prominent horror author, published a short tale titled “1408” in 1999. Mike Enslin, a cynical nonfiction writer, travels to the Dolphin Hotel in New York City to conduct research for his upcoming book, “Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Hotel Rooms,” by staying in the fabled room 1408.

    Mr. Olin, the hotel manager, informs Mike of the tragic past of the room, but this does not dissuade him, and Mike endures a night of darkness and unsettling experiences that forever alter him.

    The 2007 film adaptation of the short tale was directed by Mikael Hfstrom and starred John Cusack as Mike and Samuel L. Jackson as Olin. Mike is recommended to visit room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, as the film follows the same simple idea.

    At least until the several endings, “1408” is a fairly faithful adaptation of the source material, with the addition of a sad past for Mike and an increase in terror. What’s not to appreciate about a classic room-locked horror story?

    The older horror film “1408” received a Certified Fresh rating of 79% based on 175 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of its release.
