Pearl and her sister-in-law Mitzy waited at the audition for their name to be called. Pearl felt confident in her performance, whereas Mitzy was fearful. Pearl entered the room and, according to her, performed her best performance to date.

However, the judges disqualified her, citing that she lacked the “X factor” and that they were seeking a younger blonde. Pearl wailed and sobbed.

This was her lone opportunity to realize her aspirations, and she did not know how to deal with its conclusion. She was accompanied home by Mitzy. She revealed to Mitzy that she genuinely believed something was wrong with her.

Mitzy counseled her to confide in her husband, Howard because he would understand her regardless of the situation. She requested that Pearl help her practice what she would say to Howard.

Pearl bared her soul; she divulged her darkest, most intimate secrets. She expressed her hatred for Howard for abandoning her. Pearl admitted to having slept with another man. She remarked that she was envious of everyone with an easy life. She observed Howard when he arrived to work on the farm.

She understood he was unique due to his privileged background. Pearl realised that Howard would be her ticket out of the farm, so she claimed to be the woman he was searching for. But instead of removing her, he desired to reside at Pearl’s parents’ home.

She became pregnant with his child despite having no desire to become a mother. She was repulsed by the concept of a living being developing inside of her. Pearl was relieved to discover that she had experienced a miscarriage.

Initially, she delighted in murdering the helpless and defenseless, but later she found greater significance in killing her mother and Johnny. Through their murder, she taught them a lesson. She told them how it felt to endure pain.

Pearl revealed that she realized Mitzy had been selected for the show as Mitzy was ready to leave. Knowing how hazardous Pearl was, Mitzy was initially hesitant to confirm it, but in the end, she accepted. Pearl pursued her with an axe as she was departing. Mitzy fled Pearl’s brutality but ultimately succumbed to it.

Pearl desired to undo the mistakes she had made and prepare the home for Howard’s arrival. She cut Mitzy’s body into pieces and fed it to Thelda. She helped her folks get ready for dinner by getting them dressed. She finally accepts her plight. As her mother had counseled, she was resolved to make the best of her circumstances.

Her mother-in-law once delivered a pig riddled with maggots, which she adorned. She shared dinner with her deceased parents. Howard returned to his residence and observed the horrifying event. Holding a jar of lemonade, Pearl grinned and exclaimed, “I’m so glad you’re home!”

We know that Howard remained by Pearl’s side till her death. Was he not terrified by what she did? Or was he too terrified to react and gradually adopted her deadly behavior? Mia Goth’s broad smile at the end of the film, accompanied by quivering muscles and, eventually, tears rolling down her eyes, was an iconic scene. This single shot spoke a thousand words.

She desired a change and a fresh start, but she realized she was too unwell to ever live a regular life. She discovered in Howard a person who cared for her no matter what.

There are instances in “Pearl” that make allusions to “X.” Perhaps “Pearl” is the film that Pearl would have appreciated viewing, as it is a murder-romance with a happy ending. The film’s experimentation with the genre is impressive, but there are times when the dialogue feels somewhat caricatured.

What’s Making Pearl Consider Leaving the Farm?

Pearl is a young woman who lives with her strict religious mother Ruth (Tandi Wright) and her crippled father on a farm in Texas (Matthew Sunderland).

She is married to Howard (Alistair Sewell), whom she loves but with whom she cannot help but be angry. Ultimately, he abandoned her to fight in World War I. Currently, she feels utterly alone.

Ruth assigns her numerous chores and shames Pearl for having her head in the clouds continually. Pearl cannot help herself.

The movies provide her with a momentary escape from her existence, but she longs to go far away from the farm, to visit Europe, and to become a great dancer. And she will quickly come to detest people she believes are preventing her from achieving her goals.
