Thom Bell, who is best known for being one of the people who made Philadelphia soul in the 1970s, has gone to heaven. The talented artist died at his home in Bellingham, Washington, when he was 79 years old.
Deadline says that Thom Bell’s lawyer, Michael Silver, broke the sad news of his death. As of right now, no one knows what really caused Thom Bell’s death.
About Thom Bell
Thom Bell was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on January 26, 1943. Thomas Randolph Bell was his full name. He was an American who made a living as a record producer, arranger, and songwriter.
When Thom was young, his family moved to Philadelphia. His mom used to play the piano, and his dad used to play the accordion and Hawaiian lap steel guitar. At age 4, he got his first drum set, and he studied classical piano.
Thom first met Kenny Gamble at his sister’s house. Soon after, they started working together in a band called Kenny & the Romeos. When Bell left the group, Leon Huff took his place on the piano.
At the time, Bell worked for Chubby Checker as a staff writer and tour conductor. In 1968, he got his first job as a producer for Delfonics. He helped make songs like “La La Means I Love You” and “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind” what they are today.

That was the start of something wonderful. Soon after that, he did the string arrangement for the O’Jays’ smash hit single “Back Stabbers,” which was released on Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records label in 1976.
Thom Bell Collaborated With a Lot of Well-known Musicians
Later on, Thom worked with Dionne Warwick, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Dusty Springfield, David Byrne, Joss Stone, and Fatboy Slim. He also worked with famous musicians like Elton John, Teddy Pendergrass, Deniece Williams, and Johnny Mathis.
Thom won a Grammy for “Best Producer of the Year” in 1975. In 1993, he was given a star on the Walk of Fame of the Philadelphia Music Alliance. He was put into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2006.
Thom Bell’s wife, Vanessa, and his six children, Royal, Troy, Tia, Mark, Campbell, and Christopher, will carry on after him. Up until now, no plans for a memorial have been made public.
