Cropping a screenshot on a Mac is useful if you want to capture an image from an app but remove unwanted elements like the menu bar or dock. There is an abundance of ways to capture screenshots on a Mac, from built-in tools to third-party apps that can be purchased or downloaded for free.

You can use these techniques to get rid of extraneous background elements, apply filters for a more polished look, or make other sophisticated adjustments. How to crop a screenshot on a Mac.

Important Keyboard Shortcuts for Capturing Mac Screenshots

If you don’t know how to take a new screenshot, you won’t be able to crop an existing one. Taking a screenshot on a Mac can be done in several ways, but the quickest way is to use one of several keyboard shortcuts. In macOS Mojave and later, there is an in-built cropping tool for screenshots.

You can use these keyboard shortcuts to snap screenshots if you’re not sure how:

    • Get a full-screen shot: Type: Shift>+Command>+3>
    • Take a screenshot: Type: Shift>+Command>+4>
    • It is possible to take a screenshot of a window or menu: Input: Shift + Command + 4 + Space

    • After you’ve captured a screenshot, you can edit it by cropping it.

    Using the In-Device Cropping Function

If you need to crop a screenshot on a Mac, I recommend using the new in-built cropping tool.

In macOS, a floating thumbnail appears in the lower right corner of the display right after a screenshot is taken. It’s a mini version of the screenshot you just took, and selecting it will activate the cropping tool. The thumbnail will disappear after a few seconds if you don’t click on it, rendering the tool useless. The time remaining before it disappears cannot be prolonged, unfortunately.

Select the Area You Want to Crop:

    • Once you have your screenshot, select the Crop button in the upper right.
    • Cut out the unwanted parts of your screenshot.
    • Done should be clicked upon when you are finished.

    The Crop Tool

    Applying Preview

When working with images in macOS, double-clicking will launch Preview. With this program, you can easily trim the edges of your screenshots.

Preview’s Cropping Options for Capturing Specific Portions of A Screen Are as Follows

    • You can launch Preview by double-clicking an image in Finder.
    • Choose the pencil-shaped Show Markup Toolbar button in the upper right corner.
    • Select the area you want to keep by clicking and dragging.

    Preview Cut

    • Click Tools in the main menu to access this feature.
    • Choose Crop from the available options.
    • Figure Preview After Cropping
    • Utilizing Apple’s Photos Program
    • For organizing photos on macOS, you can use the Photos app. It’s also a simple photo editor, useful for cropping screenshots in a pinch.
    • To do this, however, you must first save your screenshot to your Mac.

In Order to Modify Screenshots in The Photos App:

    • To import images into Photos, launch the program and go to File > Import.
    • To modify an existing screenshot, simply pick it from the gallery.
    • Choose to import.
    • Insert Picture
    • Open the imported image by double-clicking it, and then select Edit from the menu.
    • Find the Crop option near the top of the screen.
    • Images are retouched

    External Methods

    • You can find a variety of third-party photo editing apps in the App Store’s Photo & Video category.
    • Some of the most well-known are Adobe Lightroom, Polarr Photo Editor, Pixelstyle Photo Image Editor, and many others besides. There are analogous apps that you can find on the web. When it comes to cropping, the behavior of various third-party photo-editing tools varies slightly.
    • Let’s take a look at the cropping functionality in Polarr Photo Editor as an example. To alter snapshots in Polarr Photo Editor:

    Processing Images for Sharing Online

    • Cropping a screenshot is easy on a Mac, whether you use one of the built-in tools or a third-party app.
    • Cropping screenshots is possible with more advanced image editing software like GIMP or Photoshop. There are also online tools you can try; a simple Google search will turn up many results, but Fotor, PicResize, and piZap are three that stand out as particularly useful.
    • Don’t have the latest macOS features? It could be time to upgrade your Mac if you are unable to install the latest updates.
