Dungy was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Cleome Dungy (1920-2002), a Shakespeare instructor at Jackson High School, and Wilbur Dungy (1926-2004), a science professor at Jackson College.

Wilbur joined the renowned Tuskegee Airmen as a pilot in the Army Air Forces during World War II.  Dungy played collegiate football at the University of Minnesota after graduating from Parkside High School in 1973.

In 1975 and 1976, he was the quarterback for the Gophers and their most valuable player. He received the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1977, which is given to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each Big Ten member institution for exhibiting both academic and athletic success throughout their undergraduate experience.

The Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League signed safety Tony Dungy as a free agent in 1977 after he went undrafted out of college.

Dungy was a defensive reserve and special teams player for the Steelers during the 1977 season and the 1978 season when they won the Super Bowl. During the latter season, he led the club in interceptions.

He was moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 1979, where he played for one season before calling it a career in the 1980 preseason with the New York Giants.

In the most recent NFL season, he was the only player to both intercept and throw an interception. When Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek both suffered injuries on October 9, 1977, the Pittsburgh Steelers turned to Dungy as their backup quarterback in a game against the Houston Oilers. On defense, he was a safety.

As a player, Dungy has won one Super Bowl, as he was a part of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XIII championship team.
