In New York City, a brand-new cannabis resource center that aims to improve equity in the state’s marijuana industry opened its doors on Sunday. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was only days away from submitting a much-anticipated federal marijuana legalization measure (D-NY).
The leader argued that the cannabis law in New York, particularly its equity provisions, should serve as a guide for the rest of the nation.
Although the state’s reform plan is a positive move, he emphasized the necessity for a change in federal policy to achieve social fairness to the fullest extent possible.

According to Schumer, his new plan to lift the restriction is related to the New York legalization statute.
The decriminalization of cannabis and specifically assisting those who have been disproportionately harmed by the drug war are the core goals of both bills.

“We’re trying to emulate what New York has done at the federal level,” said Schumer at the time, “not just in legalization and ending criminalization, but also in ensuring social justice is a basic component of any legislation.
He went on to suggest that he and his colleagues had made “some success” in persuading “conservative Republicans and libertarians” to support the legalization of marijuana.
