Russell Crowe experienced a significant physical metamorphosis for his film Unhinged,’ and it’s not the first time he’s done so for a part.
Actors in Hollywood can be divided into two categories: those who commit and those who over commit. Actors who commit to a project have a great deal of enthusiasm for it.
However, they may be unwilling to undergo extreme body modifications or other unreasonable demands in order to play the character.
Actors who over-commit, on the other hand, such as Tom Cruise and his fellow veteran actor Russell Crowe, tend to give a character everything they’ve got.
Many people may not be aware that Crowe lost 40 pounds for his performance in Gladiator, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Actor.
According to speculations, he may reduce considerably more weight in preparation for a sequel to Gladiator. Crowe appears to have felt the need to undergo another major bodily alteration several years later. This time, it’s for his next thriller Unhinged, which will be released in 2020.
On February 8, 2022, the following information was updated: Despite what Russell Crowe put his body through for this film, Unhinged received terrible reviews and mediocre box office receipts.
While the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting movie theatre closures are partly to blame for the film’s dismal box office performance, Russell Crowe and director Derrick Borte also wish the picture had captivated moviegoers more.
While some fans are fascinated by stories about actors modifying their bodies for roles, many others believe that these types of stories should be avoided.
For starters, dramatic weight gain can be perilous for actors, and no one should feel compelled to risk their lives for a movie role. Some will also point out that there are very few good fat roles written for thin actors in Hollywood, thus seeing the few overweight characters played by thin actors is disturbing (or actors who are thin most of the time).
Finally, some may argue that stories like this are sexist because, while women in Hollywood are sometimes urged to lose weight for parts, males like Russell Crowe are praised for doing the exact opposite.
Russell Crowe had initially turned down the role of ‘Unhinged’.
Crowe has more creative freedom than many other performers of his caliber when it comes to choosing his future ventures. When asked about Unhinged, the Oscar winner consented to meet with filmmaker Derrick Borte despite his intention to pass on the project.
“When I initially read it – and this is becoming an increasingly common occurrence for me – I couldn’t see what I could do with it,” Crowe said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. But after talking with a friend about the script, he realized something.
He was apprehensive to work on the film since it depicts a severe example of road rage, which is all too real. That’s when Crowe realized this was a topic he could dig into. “It just started to become something I felt compelled to do,” the Oscar winner told USA Today.
“It just started to become something I felt compelled to do, to flip the logical process aside and appreciate the importance of this subject.” “Where does society’s wrath come from?” What are we going to do with it now that we’ve constructed it?”
Crowe got increasingly concerned about presenting his character as realistically as possible after that. “I think with Russell, it was always just about how to root it and how to base it in some type of truth and keep it realistic,” Borte remarked in an interview with ComingSoon.
“Breaking down every single one of The Man’s (Crowe) behaviors to make sure they were motivated, to make sure they came from this actual place that we kind of established with this guy’s past.”
While Crowe had little trouble grasping the plot of the picture, transitioning into the role of a nameless man who begins murdering people following a road rage incident presented a new set of challenges.
Russell Crowe’s ‘Unhinged’ Role: What Did He Have To Do?
Crowe found the part to be difficult from the start, especially because he understood there was nothing relatable about the character. “The trouble with a guy like this is that he has only one goal.
“You can’t excuse his conduct in any way,” the actor explained. “You can’t soften who he is with humanity because it would be cheap.” At the conclusion of the day, he stated that his character “entered into a combat that is entirely devoid of humanity and emotion, and he is simply going to destroy until he is annihilated.”
The problem for him was not just to represent a man who had unraveled and turned into a psychopath but also to portray a man who had become a psychopath. He also had to physically alter himself into someone who appeared to have spent years not caring about his health.
Crowe put on weight easily to do this, as he had done when he was cast in Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies. He was terrified of gaining weight at the time.
In an earlier interview with USA Today, he said, “I don’t know what I was thinking when I see my tummy hanging between my knees.” “I’m not sure I’d do something like that again.” Crowe, it turned out, was willing to repeat the process at least once more.
Despite the gravity of the role, Russell Crowe found working on ‘Unhinged’ to be enjoyable.
It’s possible that the film was about road rage and Crowe’s character’s determination to kill a woman, her child, and everyone she loves. Nonetheless, behind the scenes, the atmosphere among the actors and crew was unexpectedly relaxed. Crowe even admitted to having a wonderful time.
Now you’ve seen this movie, and it’s tense on-screen. “However, the attitude on set was very different,” Crowe explained in a Fox News interview. “We were shooting in the summer in New Orleans. The sun is shining brightly.
You’ve blocked off eight miles of freeway. And, as you can see, Derrik is a really nice guy.” “I actually spend most of my time cracking jokes and making people laugh,” Crowe admitted while they weren’t filming any scenes. To me, that kind of thing is an energy builder.”
Crowe is currently attached to a number of cinematic projects. Fans are also looking forward to seeing him make his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be released in July 2022.
