    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Here’s how members of Congress in the region voted from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3.

    Along with the roll call votes this week, the Senate approved a resolution (S. Res. 35) denouncing the military coup in Burma on February 1, 2021, and the incarceration of civilian leaders in the nation that followed.

    House

    Here are the votes cast by area members of Congress

    1st House Vote:

    OCEAN SHIPPING: Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., introduced an amendment to the Bioeconomy Research and Development Act that was enacted by the House (H.R. 4521). The Ocean Shipping Reform Act was added to the bill as an amendment, which would reform several government regulations controlling oceanic goods shipping in order to promote U.S. exports. The proposal, according to Garamendi, aims to “ensure reciprocal trade in order to assist lessen the United States’ chronic trade deficit with export-driven nations,” such as China and South Korea. On Feb. 3, 367 people voted yes and 59 people voted no.

    Here are the votes cast by area members of Congress

    1st Senate Vote:

    OHIO JUDGE: The Senate has approved Bridget Brennan’s nomination to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Brennan has been a federal prosecutor in the district since 2007, and he is now the acting U.S. attorney. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, a supporter, described Brennan as “someone whose dedication to justice is clear to everyone who engages with her.” On February 1, the result was 61 in favour and 35 against.

    Senators Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) voted yes.

    2nd Senate Vote:

    SECOND OHIO JUDGE: The Senate has approved Charles Fleming’s nomination to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Since 1991, Fleming has worked as a criminal public defender in the district. Fleming “has earned consistently excellent ratings from judges he has appeared before and lawyers he has tried cases against,” according to a backer, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. On February 1, 56 people voted yes and 42 people voted no.

    3rd Senate Vote:

    THIRD OHIO JUDGE: The Senate has approved David Ruiz’s nomination to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Ruiz served as a federal prosecutor in the district from 2010 to 2016 before becoming a magistrate judge in 2016. On February 1, the result was 62 in favour and 35 against.

    4th Senate Vote:

    JUDGE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Senate has approved Rupa Puttagunta’s nomination to serve as an associate judge on the superior court of Washington, D.C., for a 15-year term. Puttagunta has worked as a legal clerk, a private practice lawyer, and is now an administrative judge in the District of Columbia. On February 2, the result was 57 in favour and 38 against.

    5th Senate Vote:

    SECOND D.C. JUDGE: The Senate has approved Seoane Lopez’s nomination to the Superior Court of Washington, D.C., as an associate judge for a 15-year term. Lopez has been a superior court magistrate judge since 2013. On February 2, the result was 59 in favour and 38 against.

    6th Senate Vote:

    THIRD D.C. JUDGE: Sean C. Staples‘ nomination to serve as an associate judge on the superior court of Washington, D.C., for a 15-year term has been approved by the Senate. Staples, who has served on the court as a magistrate judge since 2013, formerly worked as an assistant public defender and one of the court’s legal clerks. On February 2, the result was 59 in favour and 38 against.
